Hi there, aside from C++ and Java what languages should I pick up for game programming? I am entering my junior year into DePaul and am majoring in Computer Games Development (Programming Option).

Its been several years since ive programmed and only have textbook knowledge of C++/Java up to intermediate programming.

Game programmer is a very broad term. What interests you? The engine? User Interface? Toolset? Networking? The position dictates which languages you need to be solid with. For instance a UI programmer will have to know XML while somebody working on the severs will have to be familiar with shell scripting.

If you are junior haven't you taken any courses yet which involve you making a game? Or courses which give you an overview of how the industry works?

Sorry what I meant by "Junior year" I meant I attended a community college and learned basic and intermediate programming my 1st 2 years and they didnt really have anything specific regarding gaming programming, just a ton of programming languages they tought up to immediate level.

And no I dont know where I want to go in game programming.

I'm not so worried about what part of the game i'm more worried about the education or the books used to learn this stuff. If I can get access to books that will teach how to do game programming for a specific language then I can learn it no problem.

If DePaul has a game programming course, then they definitely should have some books regarding the topic in their library. On top of that, most institutions have an interlibrary-loan policy, meaning that you can check out books from another university if your library doesn't have it.
