testing mac safari 4.1 without a mac
Hi Guys,

I am developing a website for someone who uses a mac. I've done a reasonable job for firefox (don't even care about IE) but this person uses a mac and says the site is all jumbled on his computer.

I've done some searches and found a hack which may work but I don't have a mac to test it. I tried downloading safari for windows (I normally use linux) but when I open the site on this windows version of safari the site looks fine.

Does anyone know if the widows version of Safari (I am assuming I downloaded the most recent version a few days ago) is meant to render CSS the same as the mac version, and if not, is there some way for me to view the mac rendering without an actual mac computer?

Usually it’s not necessary to add hacks for Safari as it’s one of the browsers that supports most standards (and even a few things that aren’t standard yet). Also, Safari on Win and Mac shouldn’t be any different since they use the same layout engine. However, the latest version of Safari is 5.0.5 and there may be things you’ve done that Safari 4 doesn’t support (although I don’t think so).

If you gave us a link to the page in question I (or anyone with a Mac) may have a look at it and give you hints about what’s wrong.

Have him take a screenshot of the page and email it to you.

Sorry for taking a while to get back to you on this. I do appreciate your feedback.

The site is at www.simba-judah.webs.com . My friend was saying that on his mac (he is using version 4) the text boxes are all jumbled up one on top of the other so that he can't read them properly.

Thanks for the suggestion, fumigator. I will ask him for a screen shot.

hello again. I finally got the screen shot. As you should be able to see, there is a box on the far left which is overlapping. This box should be on the far right where you can see a big open space for it. I couldn't figure out to post the screengrab here so I pasted it as an attachment.

In firefox AND sarafri for windows the box is in it's correct place. My friend says he is using Sarafri 4.1 for Mac.

What this seems to indicate is that Safari for Mac does not render the same as safari for windoms.

Anyway, any thoughts?

OK, first of all you have several HTML errors , most of which are resulting from incorrectly nested div elements inside a list element where only list items are allowed. Now, I’m looking at it in Safari 4.0.5 and I don’t see the issue on the screenshot but this could be the issue as well as you having set a fixed height on .menu_container (this makes even more sense for causing this). Remove the height and see what happens.

I've done some corrections on the code so that it can pass validation, as suggested, but there still seems to be a problem.

The code validates successfully with HTML and CSS so I'm not sure if that's fixed the problem.

My friend tested on his mac a few days ago but the problem was still there, though I had only fixed a few of the validation errors. Now I've fixed all of them and the results are green.

Will someone please visit the site using mac safari 4.1 to let me know how the box at the bottom right looks? The problem is that it shoves to the left of the page overlapping the text on that side. It should be on the right side.
