How to reinitialize a "removed" USB device? Empty
PostSubject: How to reinitialize a "removed" USB device?   How to reinitialize a "removed" USB device? EmptyTue Jun 21, 2011 6:28 pm

Hi all,

I've got one of those "zillion in one" flash card readers in my machine... mounted in a 3-1/2 drive bay and connected to the motherboard USB port. Works fine.

Today, I went to remove an SD card I had installed and instead of doing "right-click / eject" in Explorer, I went to the taskbar and clicked "Safely remove USB mass storage drives (H: I: J: K: )".

Of course, this "ejected" the whole memory card reader...

The solution is simple - just log off and back on, or reboot (or pull the USB connector off, then plug it back in).

So, my question is... is there some SOFTWARE way I can "reload" or "reinitialize" the "removed" card reader?

I did a quick Google search and found a few references to a utility named "devcon", but that didn't work.

Also went into "control panel / system / hardware / device manager" and tried "Scan for hardware changes". Didn't work.

Lastly I tried "diskmgmt.msc" and did a rescan for disks.... nope didn't work either.

Anyone know a cute little utility that will do this for me?

Thanks!

Just right click on the drive for the SD card and pick 'Eject'. That should do what you want without it stopping the entire card reader.

I don't think so. Due to the reasoning behind the "remove" function (i.e. contact should be cut off completely in order to avoid corruption of data) I don't think there should be. Reboot and be a little more careful, I guess.
